Sonatina

This beautiful new design is based on the proven and successful Sonnet Class (over 500 built in South Africa), but is optimized for more sail power and a more easily driven shape. This enhances light wind performance. Her light weight combined with the scow form ensure wonderful reaching and planing performance in a breeze, while stability is impressive. High aspect ratio sails and foils promote upwind pointing and speed.

The Sonatina is perfectly sized for both single-handed and two-handed sailing. Heavier sailors can single hand with both sails up in winds up to about 12-14 knots, creating a very responsive boat. Over 15 knots, use the mainsail only, and install the unique lower forestay to promote mast bend and de-power the rig.

Building your own boat is an exciting project, adds immensely to the pleasure of sailing your creation, and is a great way to team up with a partner or child. The Sonatina can be easily built at home or your sailing club using Okoume plywood and epoxy- glass/wood saturation technique. Home-building kits are available.
